On July 22, 1946, the United Nations Economic and Social Council held the first International Health Assembly in New York, where representatives from over 60 countries jointly signed the Charter of the World Health Organization, which came into effect on April 7, 1948.

To commemorate the day of the adoption of the organizational charter, the World Health Organization was officially established at the first World Health Assembly held in Geneva in June 1948, and it was decided to designate July 22nd as "World Health Day" every year, advocating for various commemorative activities to be held by countries.

The following year, the Second World Health Assembly decided to designate April 7th as a global "World Health Day" starting from 1950, considering that most countries' schools have already had summer vacation in July each year and are unable to participate in this celebration. Since 1950, the World Health Organization has selected a theme for World Health Day every year, highlighting the key areas of concern for the organization.

Recently, the National Health Commission issued a notice calling for the promotion of World Health Day in 2023.
